Seperti halnya yang terjadi di seluruh belahan dunia saat ini, Academy Awards juga terganggu oleh pandemi corona yang masih terus berlangsung. Perayaan yang seharusnya berlangsung pada bulan Febuari lalu terpaksa tertunda hingga April.
Akibat penundaan tersebut, waktu penilaian untuk kelayakan suatu film masuk Oscar ke-93 juga di perpanjang. Hal ini tentu menimbulkan perdebatan persoalan film yang baru rilis beberapa bulan di awal tahun 2021 ini. Contohnya adalah film terbaru Warner Bros yang berjudul Yudas dan Black Messiah dan film Cherry milik Apple TV+.

Beberapa Film Yang Diunggulkan Untuk Memenangkan Oscar 2021
Untuk sekarang, Nomadland tampaknya menjadi film terdepan untuk memenangkan Oscar 2021. Semua itu bukan tanpa alasan, Nomadland telah sukses memenangkan Best Motion Picture – Drama dan Best Director (Chloé Zhao) di Golden Globes 2021. Drama ini diharapkan bisa mendapatkan lebih banyak penghargaan di Oscar.
Di sisi lain, mendiang Chadwick Boseman juga diunggulkan dan masuk nominasi Aktor Terbaik untuk penampilannya di film Ma Rainey Black Bottom. Daniel Kaluuya juga menunjukkan kebolehannya dan siap bersaing untuk kategori Aktor Pendukung Terbaik untuk penampilannya di film Judas and the Black Messiah.
